Great Lakes Basin Railroad Update

Property Owners Are Concerned For Many Reasons

great lakes basin railroadThe Great Lakes Basin is a large railroad project extending from part of Indiana, through Illinois and into the southern part of Wisconsin. The $8 Billion invested into the project from investors is full steam ahead as public meetings are being held to show the public the route and answer questions about the project.

The main issue for impacted owners is will they be fairly compensated by Great Lakes Basin Railroad, if impacted. The co-founder, Frank Patton, mentioned that they would be paid $20,000 an acre, pro-rated to the 200 foot right of way strip needed for the rails. The issues are vast, including impacting farmer operations, decreased overall land value and could bring other issues such as access, tile and potentially impacting wetlands. Are property owners going to be compensated for these potential additional issues?

The project is still early as there will be several more public meetings and completion is still years out. They still have to win federal approval of a draft and final environmental impact study before the project moves forward.
