Land Acquisitions Delaying Grand Avenue Extension

“A municipal engineer told the Ames City Council last week that the biggest factor delaying the extension of Grand Avenue is the city’s ability to acquire the land necessary to build the extension.

Tracy Warner, the engineer with the city’s public works department, told the panel at its July 10 meeting that some of the landowners in the planned construction area are asking for more money for their land while another wants theirs rezoned. One person, she said, flat-out said he wouldn’t work with the city, period.

“Be ready,” Warner told the council. “You’re going to be having some decisions to make here in the near future.”

The land buying isn’t the only issue. Warner said the project, which is estimated to cost more than $19.6 million, has yet to secure as much grant money as originally expected. New costs have added to the project, too. The addition of a bridge to the project — rather than a box culvert — has added $1.3 million, and failing pavement on South 16th Street will cost $1 million to replace. According to the council’s agenda form, right now the project is running a shortfall of more than $2.3 million, though Warner said the design team would re-evaluate the project.”
