Highway 52 Interchange in Cannon Falls, Minn.
Biersdorf & Associates Project # 3423.001
Condemning Authority: MN Department of Transportation
Goodhue County and the City of Cannon Falls are attempting to make a move that will jump start the U.S. Highway 52 interchange project on the south end of Cannon Falls.
The County agreed to commit $4 million to the project, while the City of Cannon Falls commit $2 million last week. This is part of an application for a $20 million grant from the state’s Greater Minnesota Interchange Program (GMIP), a new source of funds generated by the increased gas tax passed last year.
County and City officials have moved up the planning stages over the past few years, but have found government officials to be slow in stepping forward with the funding that’s needed.
The full $39 million project proposal includes eliminating the two stoplights on 52, a new overpass at the northern stoplight by the Cannonball, and a new overpass plus new on and off ramps south of the existing southern stoplights. The full plan also includes a new County Highway 24 that would extend westward from the new southern overpass, eventually hooking up with the existing Highway 24.

Goodhue County officials are hoping that a payment of $4 for an interchange project over Highway 52 in Cannon Falls, Minn., will give the county a better shot at receiving $20 million in state aid.
The amount won’t be enough to construct a full-scale version of the interchange, but would guarantee construction beginning before Jan. 1, 2013.
