The last ‘traveler’-Needed road project to close a Dover diner
July 25, 2008
There is unhappiness at the Travelers Diner in Dover. The state will seize the diner through eminent domain in early September to make way for two new bridges and other improvements on Route 46. Diners tend to be popular gathering spots for a crew of regulars, and this one is no exception. Many say they will miss daily conversation with friends.
The passing of the diner, however, must be balanced with the need to improve the road. The two bridges in that area are in very poor shape structurally. There are so many craters on the pavement of one bridge that driving over it is a definite challenge. Not only will there be new bridges, the nearly $40 million project will provide a direct link between Route 46 east and Route 15. Now, drivers have to essentially drive around the block to get from one road to the other.
We support improving the highway. The renovations will make the road safer and easier to travel.
The eminent domain process stipulates that government — the state in this case — pay fair market value for property it takes. The diner has turned down an offer of $1.9 million, so the dispute heads to court. The diner’s lawyer says he will continue to fight to get his client “fair compensation.” On that score, we wish him the best of luck.
