SR 78 Reconstruction Project

The purpose of this project is to add lanes and reconstruct SR 78 (Pine Island Road) from West of Burnt Store Road to West of Chiquita Blvd.
Currently, the state does not have funding for construction or to purchase the last remaining 36 acres of land needed for the project. The City is currently working with the state to loan them money needed to acquire the remaining property to speed up construction.
As of July 2, 2007, this project is still not identified in the five year work program. Property aquisition and construction phases are therefore not funded and there are no time frames associates with these phases. Older estimations showed the right of way costs to be $50 million and construction costs estimated at $40 million. However, these estimates need updating and the DOT should have new estimates within the next several weeks.
