Wilmington Bypass Project – NC

in North Carolina Projects

Biersdorf & Associates Project #  5110.001

Condemning Authority:  North Carolina Department of Transportation

This project will extend the Wilmington Bypass (Interstate 140/US Highway 17) from US Highway 421 to US Highway 74-76. It will make the bypass a four-lane limited access freeway, with interchanges at US Highway 421, Cedar Hill Road, Mount Misery Road and US Highway 74-76. The overall bypass design is meant to be a more direct route to Brunswick County and also to decrease congestion in the city of Wilmington.

The Nc/DOT will use stimulus funds to help pay for the $100 million project. The Nc/DOT has received one stimulus package to use for state-wide projects thus far, and plans on using $20 to $25 million in funds, combined with $25 million in bonds to help pay for the project. The funding combined will cover almost half of the bypass construction.

While the bypass is a top priority project in Wilmington, it’s not the area’s only notable project. A $37 million project to build a second bridge to Oak Island is behind schedule, but anticipated to be completed by Memorial Day 2010, and $31 million project to build a new Sunset Beach bridge is expected to be finished by May 2010.
