Biersdorf & Associates Project #: 3480.003

Condemning Authority:  Mn/DOT

Last Tuesday, the Steele County Board of Commissioners voted on approval for the use of eminent domain for the West Beltline Project, if needed. And as of right now, the county has already settled with four of the property owners in the area.

Steele County engineer Anita Benson said the county will need to acquire property along what will be 39th Avenue before construction can begin in 2010; however they have hopes that they will be able to negotiate with property owners accordingly. Luckily, none of the property the county is looking to acquire will require re-location of homes or buildings.

The $5.1 million project has already secured federal and state funding, however the county must finalize purchases of the land before they can get final approval from the Mn/DOT.

The beltline, which will be 39th Avenue, will initially be built as a two-lane road with paved 8-foot shoulders, a median and turn lanes. The initial project will construct the road from 18th Street SW to the existing Highway 14, and the final west beltline corridor design will eventually reach all the way to 26th Street.
