We recently spoke to the highway commissioner at the Wi/DOT, who informed us that the project is currently on hold, however the project will be included in a corridor study in the near future.

The corridor study was previously initiated along STH 42/57, from South of Sturgeon Bay to North of Sturgeon Bay, however, the study was recently pushed back. The study will commence six months from now, at the earliest.

Additionally, we were informed that the Wi/DOT is unsure whether they will realign the road or create a roundabout as a solution for the project.

The Wi/DOT recently announced that three bridges in the Zoo Interchange have reached their limits, and due to the dire conditions, the Wi/DOT is going to re-build portions of the bridges as temporary replacements until the project has full funding.

Inspectors say the current structures are not projected to last past 2012 because of deteriorating conditions and the high volume of traffic each day around the interchange. The DOT has already imposed load limits for trucks passing over the structures and recent inspections revealed severe cracks in the concrete girders, corrosion weakening the steel reinforcing bars and concrete falling from the bridges.

The new temporary bridges that will be built will be torn out and re-replaced during reconstruction of the entire interchange, however that is not projected to begin until between 2014 and 2016.

The replacement bridges are the span that carries roughly 42,300 vehicles a day northbound through the interchange on I-894/Highway 45. One ramp carries roughly 25,600 vehicles a day from southbound Highway 45 to eastbound I-94, and the another ramp carries roughly 25,100 vehicles a day from northbound I-894/Highway 45 to westbound I-94.

The full interchange is considered the busiest in the state of Wisconsin, and serves as a key corridor for the movement of goods and raw materials. Nearly 350,000 vehicles pass through the interchange each day. The project cost for the temporary replacement project is nearly $22 million.

Reconstruction of the Zoo Interchange is one of three major projects planned as part of a 30-year effort to rebuild the aging freeways in the Milwaukee area. The total price was estimated to be $6 billion, according to a report prepared by the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Plan Commission.

The Pleasant View Road Extension project is in the city of Madison, WI and will consist of two intersection reconstructions, resulting in two new two-lane roudabouts.

The intersection of Pleasant View Road and Mineral Point Road will be constructed into a two-lane roundabout, and Pleasant View Road will be extended to the intersection of Valley View Road and County Trunk Highway M. This intersection will also be re-constructed into a two-lane roundabout.

An engineer from the City of Madison recently informed us that funding has been secured for the project and construction is scheduled to begin in 2010. If everything stays on schedule for the project, it is anticipated to be completed by 2011.

The project budget was recently passed by the common council, and engineers are moving forward quickly with the project. The final plans and environmental documents are in the process of being signed and completed, and engineers are finalizing right of way acquisitions for the project.

The majority of the land needed for the project was owned by the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which was dedicated to the city for the project. The remaining land needed for the project includes one property that will be acquired and an additional property that requires relocation, both of which are in the process of completion.

Waukesha County officials told the Muskego Common Council last week that the already delayed Janesville Road reconstruction and widening had to be put on hold, once again.

The two-year project, which extends from Moorland Road to Racine Avenue now will not start until 2012, county officials said.

The director of the county department of administration explained how the recession had punched a $4 million hole in the county’s revenues, thus the county cannot afford the $25 million road project without federal funding.

The county is expected to receive nearly $6 million in federal money; according to the engineering services manager, however that money is contingent upon the completion of the environmental impact statement, which must be approved prior to construction.

That’s not all that’s holding the county back. A county budget freeze will soon keep the county from buying any more of the 19 properties that are need for the road widening.

Six have already been purchased, and offers are out on seven more, according to a county engineer. However, the engineer in charge of property acquisitions says they are working on completing the purchases in a timely manner.

Through our continuous monitoring of the project, we’ve been informed through public information from Dodge County that funding is available for the US 151 @ County Highway D Interchange Reconstruction; however it has not been fully secured.

The interchange is considered a back-bone highway project, so if a higher priority project arises in the near future, the available funding will get dispersed elsewhere. If funding is still secure by September of 2009, the property acquisition process will begin. Construction could begin as early as 2012 if funding is secured and right of way is acquired.
